I have outlined in this chapter the most important conservation consequences derived from the scientific findings on how the Serengeti ecosystem works. In particular, the loss of biodiversity causes instability; interference with migration will completely alter the nature of the Serengeti ecosystem; the continually changing environment forces the community to move outside established boundaries; and excessive modification is causing some habitats to be irrevocably destroyed. To address these changes, fixed boundaries must become flexible. This could be achieved by making areas outside the present boundaries more nature-friendly—for example, by regrowing more suitable habitats within agricultural areas so that wild species can live there and tolerating wild ungulates alongside domestic livestock (this is known as community-based conservation). Alternatively—or in addition—a system of new reserves connected with the Serengeti can be set up as contingencies—as security—to be available when the system changes and animals move into them.

These are the lessons for the future of Serengeti. Now we will see how these variations of regulation, the subprinciples, apply to other ecosystems around the world.
